Keep Your Mind Sober

brown book page

Have you ever been around anyone who likes to talk about themselves? The ones that seem to turn every moment and conversation their direction? Are you that person? I think we all need to be aware of ourselves and remember what the Apostle Paul said.

Romans 12:3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

Let’s examine what Paul is telling us. First of all, don’t think more highly of yourself than you ought to think. Does that mean we can’t think good about ourselves? Absolutely not. It just simply means to keep yourself in check, don’t put yourself before others. Don’t have an ego. Don’t always be the one that’s right.

Paul next tells us to have sober judgement. Let’s think about someone who had a few too many alcoholic drinks. Ever talk to someone like this? Ever try and ask them to explain something? They can’t. Not with any good judgement at least. We read every day about drunk drivers. They didn’t make any good judgement to get behind the wheel. This is how we should approach our thinking. Think clearly, and without being rash about things.

Finally, we do all of this “according to the measure of faith that God assigned.” Measure of Faith is simply how much we’ve been given by God and correct appraisal of ourselves. God knows the perfect balance of this for each of us. Don’t look at it as being shorted compared to another.

You’ll find yourself with better people interactions and able to speak clearly with the wisdom given to you by God if you follow this advice. As you go out today, I pray that you keep a sober mind, keep your ego in check, and lean on your measure of faith.
