A Savior Is Born

The story of Luke 2 is the beginning of a story of God’s son, Jesus. If you don’t know the story, head to biblegateway.com and look up Luke 2.

Luke 2:1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Jesus came at a time when all the world was called back to their home towns. The King James Version says that everyone went to their home cities to be taxed. Other versions say registered. When you go back to the greek writing, it’s a word that means to be registered for tax purposes.

In a way, Joseph and Mary were heading there to fill out their W2 forms. The inns were all full. These inns were more than likely large house-like (or houses) structures with open floors and mats/beds for people to lay on. Basically, some space to shelter and get some rest. It wasn’t the Holiday Inn by any means.

Joseph and Mary couldn’t find a place at the Inns, so they ended up in a stable. Why? This was the Son of God coming to save the world. Why on earth would He have to be born in a stable?

Think about this. They had their own place. They weren’t in a room with lots of other people. It wasn’t crowded. They had a manger they could use as a crib. They had soft hay to lay on instead of a hard floor. They had space for visitors to come and see their Messiah.

I encourage you to read through Luke 2 on this Christmas Day. We have a lot to be thankful for, even in a season of a deadly pandemic.

Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”

Immanuel means “God With Us”. He was with us before the beginning of the world. He was with us physically on Earth for 33 years. He is still with us and will be for eternity, should we choose to accept and follow Him.
